Shitty Interviews!

This time around last year I was actively interviewing. I remember one of the painful interviews during that time. I went to interview with a manager after having a great conversation with the recruiter It is a well-known recruiting agency But the person who was supposed to be my manager was a total douche. He couldn’t hold a conversation and kept asking me questions that would belittle my qualifications. I remember him saying, “why do you want to come back to the agency side?” Me: “I want to help more people and help place them in the organization. Corporate life is restrictive. If they don’t fit in my company, all I can do is refer them. I love the satisfaction of placing someone in the right job.” He then told me I was wrong, and that this was a thankless job, and he has never had anyone thank him for placing them. That I should really be on the corporate side. But to send him my reference and that he would call them to decide. Getting out of that room was even worse, he didn’t get up, or say thank you, he just sat there silently. That was an awkward silence. I asked him if he needed anything else, he said no. I asked if we were done with the interview, he said yes. Still he didn’t get up. I started to get up, while he was still sitting. I walked out of that interview after thanking him for his time. I didn’t deserve to be treated like that, no one deserves to be treated like this. If you are treating your candidates like this, shame on you. If you are a candidate who is being treated like this. Walk away. You don’t need to work for a company like this. He was at the same company for over 15 years and in the industry for 20+ years. In these 20 years he had never had one person thank him? No client, no candidate? This was the head-honcho for the Phoenix region. If this company was going to employ a guy who can’t hold a conversation and is an utter douche, I didn’t want to work for this company. This is what is wrong with most big name agencies. They don’t promote for leadership, they promote based on production. Those two are not simultaneous. Just because someone can produce doesn’t mean they can train and lead. They put people in leadership positions who are total jerks and then wonder why they have such a high retention rate. People don’t leave their companies, they leave their bosses. Later that day, once I was home, I emailed the recruiter who had contacted me. I thanked him for his time, and let him know that I wouldn’t be sending my references and want to take myself out of the consideration. But as always, my message is going to be #dontbeajerk
